The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in hearing aids has already begun and is shaping up to transform the way people experience sound. If you’re not a techy, the thought of AI can be a little off putting but studies show it will likely be able to offer unprecedented benefits in terms of improving clarity for the hearing aid user. I've not had a patient yet who has come to me because they want to hear worse!
Personalized Sound Profiles
One of the most exciting advancements AI brings to hearing aids is the ability to create a personalized sound profile for each user. Traditional hearing aids, while still programmed to the users specific hearing test results, rely on standard settings, which are based on an “average ear” meaning they may not account for the unique nuances of an individual's hearing loss or their listening preferences.
Improved hearing in background noise
Conversation in background noise, as any hearing-impaired person will know is often the cause of much frustration when trying to communicate.
Through machine learning algorithms, AI can analyze the user's hearing patterns, adjusting settings in real-time to optimize clarity of speech.
This is often the most controversial area of AI and honestly it can be a little bit on the creepy side. Essentially though rather than the Hearing Aid “listening” to you or “tracking” your movements it is really just collecting data about the users' preferences, listening habits, and environmental contexts
From what i have seen so far the best part about AI and other emerging technology in hearing aids is that it can be accessed by anyone and requires very little knowledge or input from the wearer, great news if you're a bit of a technophobe or just like your tech to make life easier!
